Falls are the leading cause of home injury fatalities. The safest way to climb indoors and out is to use a safe and sturdy ladder. Whether you're spring cleaning, hanging decorations or painting, the same basic ladder safety rules apply. Here are some basic tips.
1: Make sure the ladder is suited for the job and the weight of the person climbing it.
2: Check ladder for worn rugs, cracks or broken joints.
3: Always use a sturdy ladder when climbing, never climb on a chair. It’s too risky and unsafe.
4: Place ladder on a level surface, step ladders should be fully open and all locks engaged.
5: When using a ladder outdoors, choose a location that is well away from all power lines.
Coming in contact with live wires can be fatal.
6: When using an extension ladder always observe the 4 to 1 rule. This means that for every 4 feet of
distance between the ground and the upper point of contact (such as the wall or roof), move the base of
the ladder out 1 foot.
7: Make sure that the rungs are dry and keep both hands on the ladder and face it when climbing up or down.
8: Keep your body centered on the ladder and gauge your safety by your belt buckle. If your buckle passes
beyond the ladder rail, you are over reaching and at risk for falling.
9: Stand at or below the highest safe standing level on a ladder. For a step ladder, the safe standing level
is the second rung from the top, and for an extension ladder, it's the fourth rung from the top.
10: If climbing onto another surface, make sure the ladder extends at least three feet past the surface you're climbing onto.
11: Keep both feet on the ladder
12: Never leave ladder unattended.
